Meet Hala and Nahla,
founders of Baseema Food

If you’ve met Hala and Nahla at the farmers market, or know them personally already, you’ll instantly learn that these women are dynamic and full of life—just like their soup. With a strong devotion to their families, excitement about sharing their middle eastern flavors with the Detroit area, and an abounding love for life, these two women share their culture in a vibrant way through their products.

In 1993, Hala and Nahla met in Spain, both seeking asylum and immigration to the United States after the Gulf War began. Much of their experience in the kitchen is passed down from the women in their families—their mothers and grandmothers before them in their homeland Iraq (Nahla’s mother, Najiba, is the woman behind the logo!). Their Chaldean roots are central to how they live their lives, caring for family and their community with immense pride and authenticity.

Thirty years after meeting, Hala and Nahla decided to start a business together to share their unique family recipes and flavors with the surrounding area. Their hope is to introduce new flavors and cultural foods in a uniquely healthy, vibrant way.
